Question Is there anything I can do?

Yo, I'll be going to Greece in August for 3 weeks if everything goes as planned, anyway I'd like to use my email account(s) there (and other accounts too), but after reading Joakim and petter's "horror stories", I feel a little bit nervous... Since I can't know what people have installed on those public computers.

I don't want to lose my accounts to hackers!!!

So is there anything I can do, or should I just take my chances? 3 weeks without reading emails and sh1t is too long.

If keyloggers are installed, there's not much you can do... just remember to change your passwords when you come home

But man, do you really need to check your e-mails? The best thing would be not to do that

But I've used different internet cafe's in different countries for 10 years and never had a problem.

And now when I did get a problem it happened when I was home, using my own PC.

I wouldn't worry more about opening my emails in a cafe than on my own PC.

You can fuck keylogging bitches easily by opening the notepad when you type your password.

One letter in MSN, one random letter in notepad, two letters in MSN, two random letters in notepad etc etc..

Never install MSN, use hotmail's website or any other web mail service. There's a couple programs that can decipher MSN passwords even if they're crypted. Firefox or IE MD5 your data so all you have to do after your check your mails is delete the cache and you'll be fine.

Dunno what they do, maybe using a auto restore point or something... but whenever I came back to the same IT cafe, even if it was the day after using the same PC in there... everything was always erased/cleared.. downloaded pics, movies, cookies..everything was gone.

Now when I'm on wifi (sometimes protected sometimes not) I feel more insecure.

    Seriously man.. i wouldn't worry.

i mean it's not like, let's open a IT cafe and hack accounts..

Yeah, that's a good idea if the keylogger only logs keystrokes... which most keyloggers do

Yes. you can burn a disc and run the CD Live without installing it on the public computer. i dont trust public computers with their windows installed...

    1. insert CD,
    2. Run Ubuntu as a Live CD
    3. Write - Read E-mail, browse net
    4. Eject Disk
    5. Turn Off public computer

...easy (im not sure if local admin are happy to see you run their computers with another OS)

Trial Ubuntu before you install it.

    1. If you're using a CD: Put the Ubuntu CD into the CD/DVD-drive and restart the computer. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the CD.

If you don't get this menu, read the booting From the CD guide for more information.

    2. If you're using a USB drive: Most newer computers can boot from USB. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the CD.

If your computer does not automatically do so, you might need to edit the BIOS settings. Restart your computer, and watch for a message telling you which key to press to enter the BIOS setup. It will usually be one of F1, F2, DEL, ESC or F10. Press this key while your computer is booting to edit your BIOS settings.

You need to edit the Boot Order. Depending on your computer, and how your USB key was formatted, you should see an entry for 'removable drive' or 'USB media'. Move this to the top of the list to force the computer to attempt to boot from USB before booting from the hard disk. Save your changes and continue.

    3. Choose your preferred language and click on 'Try Ubuntu 10.04'

    4. Your live CD desktop should appear. Have a look around!
